Well, this week I learned something about Modern Hiker fans – you make really good use of your smartphone cameras on Twitter and Instagram.
Since I opened up Photo Friday submissions to those sites (tag ’em with #modernhiker) I’ve been FLOODED with incredible views, great vistas, and just plain fun shots. Thanks so much to everyone who submitted on the Flickr Page or via social media!
First up, Rowena Pelayo wow’ed us with this epic shot trekking up the 99 Switchbacks to Mount Whitney. People either love or hate that section of trail, but it brought back some good memories for us!

Next, Nadim took this shadowy self-portrait on Topanga’s Eagle Rock, with some nice California chaparral below for good measure.

Instagrammer Jamie Familara trekked out to Woodson Mountain in San Diego County (we’ve got a write-up on the way!) and snagged this fun shot on Potato Chip Rock with her twin sister.
And Ryan Mckinney made our jaws hit the floor with this unbelievable sunset at Mount Evans in the Eastern Sierra.
I’ve got to tell you, every time I check for these photos on Thursday night, it brings a smile to my face … and makes me get my hiking boots out and ready for the weekend! Here’s hoping they do the same for you – and remember: when you get home from this weekend’s adventure, be sure to submit your photos on our Modern Hiker Flickr Page, posting them to our Facebook Page Wall, or tagging them on Instagram or Twitter with #modernhiker!
