You love spending time outdoors — and more than that, you love sharing that love with others. Maybe you post gorgeous trail photos on social media, or write hiking stories on a personal blog, or maybe you’re just the person your co-workers gather around every Monday to hear about some wild backcountry adventures … you might be a great fit here at Modern Hiker!

Modern Hiker is actively looking for new contributing writers across the West. Join our growing team of outdoor enthusiasts and help us keep people informed on the trail and inspired to become the next generation of outdoor stewards.

Since 2006, Modern Hiker has become a trustworthy source of outdoor news and information, reliable reviews, and accurate trail beta – and we take that responsibility seriously. We strive to provide exemplary storytelling on all of our posts, and we never cull from crowdsourced data or scrape Wikipedia entries and pass them off as all the information you need. If you want to be part of our team, you can

  • Share your favorite trails with the world
  • Establish yourself as a local hiking expert
  • Get your work seen on the #1 hiking blog on the West Coast (source:
  • Join a fun and collaborative community that includes five published outdoor authors.
  • Improve your writing
  • and even make a few bucks while hiking (we hire trail guide writers on a contract basis for a specific number of guides and blog posts)

We are primarily looking for trail guide writers, but we are also considering folks who would be interested in part-time regular blogging on the site as well, about outdoor issues both local and national.

By joining the Modern Hiker team, you’ll have access to gear for reviews, help people discover and enjoy new outdoor adventures, have your work featured on a site with more than a million pageviews per month – and on our social media channels as well.

Although we will do our best to promote your own projects, we’re not looking for people who are just looking to up their Instagram likes or contribute a cookie-cutter listicle for their by-lines. We’re looking for people who truly love the outdoors, and who want to share that love with others to inspire and educate the next generation of outdoor stewards. We want to help you establish yourself as a bona-fide hiking expert in your region … and hey, if we can help you nab a book deal, we’ll do that, too. We’ve done it before!

To help us out, use the form below or send an email to writing at with the following information so we can get started and see if we’re a good match for each other.

If you are interested in contributing Hike Write-Ups, know that we need three things: Good Writing, Good Photographs, and a GPX track of the hike.

If you don’t have a dedicated GPS unit yet, there are alternate ways of getting tracks for hikes, including low-cost smartphone apps, and free web apps that will let you hand-draw routes onto a topo map. The more experience you have with GPS files, the easier it will be – but we can walk you through the basics if you’re not familiar with that stuff yet. If you have a good example of writing, you can also attach a Word Doc, Text File, or PDF on the form below. We’ll get back to you if we dig your stuff and we’ll take it from there.

We look forward to e-meeting you!

Note: we are not currently accepting pitches for guest posts or articles. We are primarily looking for trail experts in the following regions, but are open to proposals throughout the American West.

  • Los Angeles
  • Las Vegas
  • Denver
