BIKE ROUTEWhile this Thursday is officially “Bike to Work Day,” L.A. kicked off it’s love for 2-wheeled nonmotorized transport this morning, in a full-on Bike to Work Week.

Blogdowntown has the scoop on the opening events, as well as some info on what’s going on the rest of the week.

Tuesday, at 8AM, the Good Samaritan Hospital will hold a Blessing of the Bicycles, which you might want to have if you’re going to be biking on LA city streets.

On Wednesday, volunteers will lead a biking tour of downtown LA at 8AM. Meet at the Civic Center Metro Red Line station.

Thursday is officially Bike to Work Day, with free rides on all Metro services for bikers all day, and pit stops with free refreshments and giveaways from 6 to 9AM.

I just started biking to work again, after almost a year of walking. I think it’s the best way you can possibly start a morning, and while – yes, L.A. drivers can be pretty oblivious to your presence, if you ride defensively, follow traffic laws and stay alert, you’ll be fine. Also, if the riding gets hairy, it’s LEGAL to ride on the sidewalk in LA unless otherwise noted.

This is a nice show of affection for bikers from the city. Not as nice as, say, letting bikers use the Metro subways during rush hour, but nice nonetheless.

When you’re done enjoying all of this week’s festivities, set your biking calendars for the annual Los Angeles River Ride.
