When you’ve kicked off your boots, set up camp, and lit your responsibly-created fire (or, if you’re in the Angeles National Forest, lit your approved gas stove), there are few things more satisfying than toasting up a marshmallow and downing a calorie-replenishing s’more. I didn’t think there was any room for improvement on the simple graham cracker-marshmallow-chocolate formula, but apparently I was wrong.
Backpacker.com has compiled a list of “Six S’more Upgrades,” including recipes that incorporate apple slices, mint Andes candies, and my personal favorite – the Mexican S’more – which adds a bit of cinnamon and chili powder to the mix.
Apparently, they hit quite a nerve – or taste bud – because readers started chiming in with their own home-rules s’mores ideas, including one who recommends putting the chocolate INSIDE the marshmallow before you roast it. Genius!
