Back in 2010, the National Park Service introduced the Rim of the Valley Corridor, a “special resource study” area, to determine whether it made sense to link the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area (SMMNRA) with the San Gabriel Mountains (“including the mountains encircling the San Fernando, La Crescenta, Santa Clarita, Simi, and Conejo Valleys”) for inclusion in the National Park System (or as an addition to the SMMNRA). The proposed area would include miles of new trails and campgrounds, increased funding for conservation efforts, and important wildlife corridors for our local fauna.
While we’ve been keeping up with all of the action surrounding the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument, there hasn’t been an update on the Rim of the Valley Corridor until now. The first draft of the study is complete, and they’re holding the first public meeting about the report findings this Tuesday, April 21, from 12:30pm to 2:00pm online – visit the study website for information about the meeting and how to participate.
There’s also a fresh round of town hall public comment meetings coming up in early May and June if you like to make your voice heard a bit more literally – see below for details. If you can make it to one of these meetings, we strongly encourage you to do so. If not, you can also read the study draft and submit comments via the study website, by email ([email protected]), or by going old school & mailing your comments in to this address:
