Photo Friday – August 9, 2014

If you’re in an office counting down the minutes until you get to lace up your hiking boots for the weekend, odds are it’s time for another Photo Friday.

This week we had more excellent submissions of outdoor photos from around the web. It’s getting tougher and tougher to pick favorites!

First up is frequent contributor Jon Bradley, who captured this beautiful panorama of the San Gabriels from Mount Wilson.

Maybe it’s the heat we’ve had lately, but Twitter’s JustAroundtheBend and I are definitely on the same mental wavelength and dreaming about getting some good desert hikes in.

You can look at our urban light pollution in two ways – one: the thing that prevents you from seeing most of the stars in the sky at night, or two: as a great backdrop for a night hiking photo, like Shelly Bergstrom.

And finally, this fantastic photo from Mount Whitney from Danny Valadez. He dedicated his recent summit to his grandmother Nina Sole Duenas Valadez, who he found out passed away at the age of 101 while taking a break at Upper Boy Scout Lake. He awoke to this beautiful alpenglow the next morning.

Congratulations to this week’s winners! You’re all getting a code for a 30% discount from our friends at Sierra Trading Post, who are sponsoring our Photo Friday prizes for the entire month of August.

Remember, you can submit your own photos via our Flickr Pool, or on Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #modernhiker.
