On the first day of the 112th Congress, Southern California’s representatives wasted no time in acting to protect more of our backcountry.
Representative David Dreier (R-San Dimas) introduced the San Gabriel Mountains Wilderness Bill, which would designate 18,000 acres of the San Gabriel Mountains as wilderness and add them to the existing Sheep Mountain and Cucamonga Wilderness areas.
While some of the bill’s provisions will most likely be altered, this is a step in the right direction for the San Gabriel Mountains Forever group, which hopes to protect 36,000 acres in the mountains and add Wild and Scenic designations to 44 miles of the San Gabriel River, San Antonio Creek, and Middle Fork of Lytle Creek.
