If you’ve been looking for a list of big mountains to hike this year that are a bit outside of the LA area, the San Francisco Chronicle’s got your back. They just posted a list of 5 prominent California peaks, along with some helpful links for more information on planning your trip, choosing a route, or dealing with wilderness permit bureaucracy.
As the paper is in San Francisco, all of the peaks are in central and northern California. The list includes the big names like Half Dome and Mount Whitney, but also lesser known peaks like Mount Tallac and Mount Dana.
Of course, if you wanted to stick closer to home, you could also supplement this list with Mount Baldy, Mount San Jacinto, and Mount San Gorgonio. I’m aiming to knock them all off this year, just as soon as that snow starts clearing up.
