In recent years I have been blessed to be out hiking more often than I ever imagined I would be. That said, I’m a true believer in being prepared for the unexpected when hiking or backpacking. We’ve all heard of carrying the 10 essentials and the reasons why they are so important. Having taken wilderness first aid to arm myself with additional knowledge; my first aid kit is an absolute must in my pack.
There are two routes you can go with for your outdoor first aid needs – you can assemble your own kit based on your own specific needs and protections depending on where you’re going and what kinds of activities you’ll be doing, or you can start off with a pre-assembled kit and whittle down the selection from there.
If you’re going with the “let someone else get this project started for me” route, Adventure Medical Kits provide an amazing selection of all things needed for your outdoor adventures – even a kit specifically designed for you and your four-legged hiking buddy.

Adventure Dog Series: Me & My Dog Medical Kit ($50.00)
I really liked the idea that I could have one kit with dual support for hikers human and canine. This kit was very comprehensive with manuals for pet first aid and wilderness medicine for people. The kit itself weighs 1.47 lbs and should be good for a 1-4 day trip. While all the adventure medical kits come with a nice nylon bag, the kit itself pulls out into a waterproof and sealable package.
With all the hiking, backpacking and off-trail peaks, my pups and I like to bag, I knew we could put this kit to a true test. I myself regularly get scrapes and cuts and it was great having the single use packages of the antibiotic ointments, as well as the antiseptic towelette to clean my hands my scrapes trekking on overgrown trails. My little pup Lucy gets her dewclaw torn on occasion and what this kit had that my first aid kit did not was a self-adhesive bandage that did not stick to her fur. Not only was it easy to apply, but it was easy to remove once at the vet. Thankfully she is super easy to handle and I did not have to use the triangle-bandage as a possible muzzle. This would come in very handy on my big pup Lu, since she doesn’t always like having her paws touched. The one item I used on both my pups was the tweezers, which helped remove some unwanted hitchhikers at the end of our adventures.
