Over the weekend, the Williams Fire broke out in San Gabriel Canyon and quickly spread to over 3,000 acres. You probably saw the giant plumes of smoke coming out of the mountains.

Well, there has been some progress but it’s too early to call it good news. The now-3,600 acre wildfire is 15% contained and firefighters say they may be fighting it until next week due to the steep terrain.

There are now almost 800 firefighters working in the effort to contain the fire – 5 have been injured so far. San Gabriel Canyon has been evacuated except for 25 who elected to remain. The search for three missing hikers on the East Fork Trail has been called off after a search and rescue helicopter couldn’t find anything – still no word on whether or not the hikers have been found outside the Forest.

Until further notice, the CA-39 and all of San Gabriel Canyon are off limits to hikers, including the Bridge to Nowhere, Smith Mountain, Lewis Falls, and the Crystal Lake Recreation Area.
