Yes, I know it’s mid-March and we’ve already had days when we’ve needed to turn on our Air Conditioners, but that doesn’t mean that winter’s given up on us just yet.

An storm system expected to affect Southern California all weekend may have surprisingly low snow levels, and it was enough of a worry for the Angeles Forest to preemptively close some roads before the storm even hits.

Beginning at 5AM on Saturday morning, the Angeles Forest Highway will be closed from Upper Big Tujunga Canyon Road to Aliso Canyon Road, and Upper Big Tujunga Road to the Angeles Crest Highway (SR-2) will also be closed (PDF).

Snow levels are predicted to be as low as 2000 feet, which is pretty dang low. That means it may also be a really great time drive out to the Forest to see some of the wintry white stuff first hand. Anything near Mount Baldy will most likely get a good amount, but the ski area itself will be closed until Sunday due to predicted high winds. A drive to the top of Mount Wilson would be an easy trip for families, too. If the wind isn’t too bad, Sunset Peak could be a relatively easy snowshoe hike with some killer views of the Baldy Bowl.
