KCET’s documentary series Lost LA, based on the archives of LA As Subject and an absolute must-see for anyone who considers themselves a SoCal History Nerd, is taking a look at the Descanso Gardens in La Cañada Flintridge.
Located at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains and nestled into a picturesque valley by the San Rafael Hills, the Descanso Gardens feature rotating art exhibits, gardens in a variety of styles and plant communities (including a relatively new addition of California native plants), a great café, and even a miniature train ride. We’ve always found the Descanso Gardens to be a more low-key, neighborhood-y version of the better known Huntington Gardens a bit further east — and we like it that way!
The Lost LA episode looks at the gardens as a microcosm of LA history and politics, and it airs on KCET this Tuesday, July 18th at 8:30PM. We got a sneak peek at the episode and even as frequent visitors, there’s lots of new stuff to learn!
Here’s a preview trailer:
Also, if you’re visiting the gardens, we recommend packing your hiking boots in your car — there’s a great trail up to a relic of L.A.’s Civil Defense Era just outside the Gardens’ entrance gate — and it also features some pretty spectacular views of the San Gabriel and Verdugo Mountains, too!
