Yesterday afternoon, the West Coast Editor of the National Geographic Adventure magazine tweeted that the magazine would be ending publication after the December issue, ending 10 years of phenomenal writing and photography about outdoor adventures all over the world.
Times are tough for print media right now, and with the added economic downturn, the magazine couldn’t keep in the black, even with a reduced publication schedule. It’s a sad story that’s happening to a lot of my friends in the publishing business.
According to National Geographic, the brand itself will remain around, as part of a new “multi-platform model that will include newsstand editions, books, e-magazines, mobile applications and a robust Web site” – and hopefully most of the staff of the magazine will be included in one way or another.
For a personal account of the life of the magazine, and to leave comments, please visit West Coast Editor Steve Casimiro’s site, The Adventure Life. I thank them for their years of work, and wish them all the best of luck!
